Shaniqwa Jarvis - Rest Assured, Progress Is Being Made

Anthony Gallery welcomes Shaniqwa Jarvis to Amsterdam for Rest Assured, Progress Is Being Made, a new solo exhibition opening on Thursday, September 10.

Bringing together photography, painting, collage, childhood images, damaged negatives, book proofs and newly created works, the exhibition traces different moments from across Jarvis’ life and practice. Rather than treating the past as something to leave behind, Jarvis returns to earlier images and ideas, reworking them and allowing new meanings to emerge over time.

At the heart of Rest Assured Progress Is Being Made is a question around what progress actually looks like. Does moving forward always mean making something new, or can growth also come through revisiting what was already there?

Across the exhibition, photographs are layered, painted over and transferred onto new surfaces, while mirrored works and suspended materials ask viewers to move around them and reconsider what can be seen from different perspectives. The result is a body of work that feels cumulative rather than linear, connecting Jarvis’ editorial photography, fine art practice and memories across decades.

Founded by Isimeme “Easy” Otabor, Anthony Gallery recently expanded from Chicago to Amsterdam, continuing its commitment to presenting contemporary artists and creating new connections between creative communities.
